Procedural mix-ups delayed the appointment.
Senator Maria Cantwell of Washington asked the Senate for unanimous consent to confirm the first woman to serve as Secretary of the Army. On Thursday morning, Christine Wormuth’s nomination to lead the Army was approved by the Senate with a unanimous vote.
There was some confusion in the confirmation process, as the Senate seemed poised to approve her nomination Wednesday evening. However, the original unanimous vote was rescinded for an undisclosed reason. Majority Leader Schumer has not commented on the cause for the revoking of the first vote.
Wormuth worked in the Pentagon during President Obama’s administration and most recently served as the director of the International Security and Defense Policy Center at the RAND Corp.
